An automated external defibrillator (AED) consists of a portable unit designed to treat life-threatening irregular heartbeats through defibrillation. This involves the application of electricity to stop the arrhythmia and give the cardiac muscle an opportunity to reestablish useful heart rhythms. AED units are designed to be simple to use for individuals to provide first aid as well as those who may be certified first responders or who have undergone basic life support classes.
